The Series Project is about producing small photographic books on a specific concepts. These are all personal projects.
Homestead. This was the first in the series project. I knew the family that had moved out of the old farm family home. This book was done on the couple of visits but it has become a long term project as the house had succumbed to the elements.
Fire. I had to visit this burnt out house and it was a sensory overload, the smell, the texture, the feeling and the sight of it. This book came together very quickly and remains a favorite. It also became 1 of the 3 part solo exhibition at Photospace Gallery.
Secret Garden. Dog Island is a very small island just outside the Bluff harbour. It is home to NZ’s tallest lighthouse, now automated the old lighthouse keepers houses and gardens are abandoned. This series is on the gardens, once nicely manicured hedgerows were left to the elements to grow and bend with the prevailing southerly winds. A surreal place to visit.
Sheraton Rarotonga. A hotel project that started back in the 1980’s and was 80% complete when the Italian funding money stopped. Amid allegations of mafia and money laundering the end result was the Cook Island left with a $120million dept and an 5 star hotel that was never to be finished.
Urban Zoo. The second book in the series project, I was exploring the way man was adapting to city living, the more normal it has become the more they have become trapped inside the concrete and steel. All around cities there are references to nature, part desire, part hope.
Low Tide. I was going through a very flat period of photography, for months I was struggling to visually see and unmotivated. A weekend trip with two friends, we planned to be at the coast on low tide and at sunrise. The rising sun was invigorating and I was kick started again. A series of images I was very pleased with, the art of nature has always been close to my heart.
First Snow. The first snow I always look forward to, it’s a transformation of the landscape for a brief moment. All is clean and fresh, stripped back to the bare elements.
Manufactures Spaces. I don’t find empty shops a reflection of the cities health, I find them a fascinating insight to its immediate history. They ask questions, who was in there? what did they sell? what happened? whats going to happen next? Most people walk by without a second glance but take note for tomorrow the story may start a new chapter.
This is an ongoing project.
Ten2Ten - Mata-Au & Man. A project where on 15th Feb 2020, ten photographers went out and took images for a book in one day. I chose to photograph the Clutha river from source to sea showing the influences man had had on the river over the last 170 years.
